NEWSPAPER DUEY

Satin + paper mâché + newspaper, 2025

Constructed from local newspapers, this durag reclaims the narrative by centering stories that are often overlooked. Layered with articles highlighting Black men doing meaningful work, affirmations, and moments of joy, the piece transforms media into message. Created for Giger Root’s Man, Speak Up campaign, the Duey challenges dominant headlines and offers a counter-story rooted in truth, care, and visibility.

It stands as a reminder that Black men are more than statistics—they are leaders, creators, healers, and changemakers. Through the transformation of media into wearable art, the piece asks viewers to consider who gets represented, how they are represented, and what stories are given space to be seen.

What narratives about Blackness and Black people do you want to see reframed, challenged, or told differently?
