TIE DUEY

silk neck ties, 2025

Constructed from thrifted neckties, this piece brings together two accessories often viewed through completely different lenses. The necktie has long been associated with professionalism and respectability, while the durag has often been labeled “ghetto” or inappropriate in those same spaces. By merging the two, the Tie Duey blurs the line between what is considered professional and what is not, questioning who gets to define those standards in the first place.

If a necktie represents professionalism and a durag represents the opposite, what does that say about the standards we’ve been taught to accept?
